Its a cross browser all CSS way to get a footer to stay at the bottom of a browser window. Important when the page has a small amount of content, and it even works on IE6 …which to the rest of the word doesn’t exist, but it does at my job:(

NBC’s legal team has one more headache on its hands. On Tuesday afternoon, the company was served with a lawsuit by the Font Bureau, one of the country’s leading typographic design firms and the company responsible for crafting typefaces for the likes of Apple, Microsoft, and the New York Times Co.What would prompt a company that designs fonts to wage a legal assault on the media conglomerate?

It seems NBC didn’t secure the rights to use a handful of Font Bureau’s trademarked typefaces. The same ones, we should add, that have been used as part of NBC’s fall marketing campaign to tout shows like The Jay Leno Show, Saturday Night Live and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. In a trademark and copyright infringement lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court, Font Bureau argues that NBC only paid for a single license—which would only permit the company to install the typefaces on a single computer—and only paid to use a limited number of fonts. But NBC went ahead and copied the fonts to a bunch of other computers within the company, Font Bureau claims, and also started using several other fonts for which licenses were never obtained. (In case you’re wondering, the typefaces in question include Bureau Grotesque, Interstate and Antenna.)

I love vintage/classic circus graphic design and style. I love all the typography, the colors, the costumes. Its so kitchy and stimulating to me. Large striped tents, diamond patterns, yellows and reds, and lovely little glittered costumes…fabulous.
I found out about the large book “The Circus” by Taschen, makers of many graphic style books. At first I really wanted it, but then I actually saw it in person at Atomic Books in Hamden…and its $200. Its a gigantic book, and its $200. Bummer.

Then I saw that I can flip through the book online. Of course not as fun as seeing it in person, but it saves me $200, and I can still go look through the book.

I moved from CT to Northern Virginia in December 1994. It was the mid point of my Jr year in High School. Sure I wanted to get the hell out of CT, but once I moved, things were so much more different. So many people, so much traffic, so many shopping centers, so many schools. But that’s when I discovered talk radio on WJFK. My daddy listened to talk news radio which can be dry, but when I came across just plain talk radio, I realized how enjoyable it could be. Conversations with out uncomfortable pauses. Funny opinions and stories, and I truly enjoyed it. I listened to Howard Stern in the morning driving to school, and Don and Mike in the afternoon. Back in the high school days, they started at 2pm, I got out of school at 2:10pm. Sometimes I would cut out a little early to hear their show opening, which was random and interesting clips from movies and TV.

WJFK was there for me after high school, when I went to community college, and after that when I wasn’t working at all. It was there when I moved, it was there when I got a job, there during my job, there when I lost my job. That station was there for me for most of my life…14 years. I listened when Stern left, listened to the many shows that came and went during mid days, and always Don and Mike in the afternoons. I cried when Dons wife died, which was strange feeling so much hurt for someone I met once but listened to everyday. I was there when he left the show, I was going to listen no matter what.

Then in Baltimore, WJKF was gone. It went to all sports. Which meant that I wouldn’t be able to listen on the radio in the car. That was a very difficult thing to wrap my head around and get over, since I started a job and was driving a lot. But still, I listened online all day at work, no matter what. And then I lost my job again, and needed WJFK more than ever. I was home all day, and lonely, and the one thing to keep me going was listening to Big O and Dukes and Mike O’meara. They kept me laughing. They told me what was going on in the world. I didn’t even watch TV, I listed to WJFK online. I was there, and I needed it.

And then they went all sports. It felt like a family member in my life died. This was not some radio station I turned on once in a while, this was a station that has been a large part of my life. And they died. Just like that. They took away all the people I cared about, and replaced them with people talking about fucking bull shit sports. I hate major sports. I cant think of anything more annoying and tedious than to hear people talk all day about a bull shit, worthless baseball game. I got over the fact that Baltimore had done it to me, but I held on to DC. I had my DC. And when DC died, it all really died. And I cried. July 17th, I cried and cried, because it was over.

I hate executives that think they know what they’re doing and ruin life for real people. I hate the strange empty feeling of having that station be gone. It must seem strange to someone who doesn’t get it, but for those who listened and understand it not strange. Sure someone can say to me and all the others “Its a radio station, get over it” but to me, its like a family member or a friend I had for that long, suddenly stop talking to me.

A couple days ago, Big O and Dukes had a little get-to-gether at a nifty bar in Northern VA. Nothing like the old “Don and Mike Vegas Style Shows”, it was just them there talking to people. I went, because I just wanted to hug them, tell them I miss them a lot, and that I’m a fan…and I did exactly that. I am not in the demographic that they were made for, I am not white, I am not a male, I do not care about sports. But I was a fan of WJFK no matter what. That didnt matter, all the fans didnt matter. WJFK died, and a little part of me died as well. Sure I’ll survive, but things wont be as funny.

Here is a great post about the station flip and The Mike O’meara Show

Last night I came across this PDF about the new Pepsi logo. Its 27 pages, but a very light 27 pages.

Its a pretty interesting read, and maybe a little funny. Many diagrams of the “DNA” of the past logos (taking the logo and pointing out the curves by using a circle), previous bottle shapes, design proportions…and then comparing the logo to the magnetic force of the earth??? I don’t know about all that.

Either way, a simple read that is pretty humorous at times, somewhat educational, and a small glimpse into the wackyness of Pepsi?.

Last weekend, I was bored and alone and figured to make my way downtown to the ‘ol Artscape. I usually just drive there, but for Artscape, I take the light rail, meaning a typical 15 minute drive is turned into an hour journey of driving to the light rail, waiting for the train, and all the traffic the train waits on downtown. Its pretty annoying, but thats the way it has to be.

I went over to see the Chinese acrobats. I was slightly impressed at their performance, but not blown away as I had hoped. Still, it was at the right price for me anyways. (free)

I did not know that Artscape had doubled in size. I didn’t go last year, so this year I was shocked to see it had spilled up Charles Street and over the bridge, and up Charles street some more.

I kind of got sucked into it and kept walking way more than I thought I would have, checking out all the sillyness happening on the bridge. My favorite was the Camera Obscura, where you go to a dark little room with a screen, and through a hole in the door, you see whats outside on the screen. It so simple, and very “old tech”. But still fun.

I also enjoyed watching the game of life sized foosball, with people on harnesses attached to pipes and kicking a ball through the goal. Genius!

I have never gone to Artscape by myself, this was a first for me. And overall, it wasnt so bad being alone. Since Artscape has grown so much, with more things around than art, it was kind of fun. I wasnt even that interested in the art, I liked all the other happenings. I suppose I ever really noticed that there were other parts to Artscape other than art I cant afford and food.

Here are my photos I took there.

Oh man, things have been slipping my mind lately, and I actually totally forgot that today was Canada Day. Me…forgot…yeah! The most wanna-be Canadian America has (haha).

I would have totally forgotten if my bother hadn’t called and reminded me, soon there after I left the house to go get crepes. Of course my husband kept mumbling about how UN-Canadian crepes are, and I say “Whatever” to that. I like to play up the French-Canadian aspect of Canada, since I love Montreal so much. And besides, I don’t think there is any place in Baltimore serving poutine.
So after that, its was time to watch “Strange Brew” on Nexflix/Xbox, I have never seen the movie before. I usually watch “Canadian Bacon” on Canada Day, and I thought this year I watch something else.

So wave your red and white proudly!

Got them puppies printed out at Kinkos. Since I wanted multiple designs, getting them done traditionally wouldn’t work, because I dont want 250 cards of one design. I have a bunch left over when I made business cards a few years ago, and Im not that into that design today.

So I took a standard business card size, including the bleed and layed them out on a page, made some crop lines, and went to get them printed and cut on a card stock. I really like the way they turned out, I got 80 cards with 5 different designs. Generally, it was more expensive than getting 250 at VistaPrint, but not having to feel stuck with a whole box of cards in a design Im not feeling works better for me.

Detroit police have acknowledged an error in their 2008 homicide total submitted to the FBI, a change that pushes Baltimore down from the top spot for homicide rate among large U.S. cities.

It just came out that Baltimore was #1 in murders, kind of surprising…but also kind of not really. I live in Baltimore, and it is a dangerous city. Then again, so is DC. I think most people think DC is a lot safer because its a better looking city, but its still fairly dangerous. I love going to Philadelphia, and its dangerous there as well. But Baltimore is out of control with the murder rate, everyone knows that.

So now that Baltimore has been dropped down to #2 in murder rate, well…that still doesn’t really help me feel better.

Its really quite lovely. A little bit of halftone dots, a little splatter, a little swirly…Its perfect for the event its for. Great use of colors. (I love strong colors, in case you didnt know) I love that it has some “messy/splatter” elements as well as a decent balance of white space. (I know I can use more white space in my life) I kind of want to go to this Philly Designers Market, except that I’m sure the items there will not be cheap, and I’m not in the mood to spend monies at this time.

http://www.annapolisgreekfestival.org/

I’m probably going to attend on Friday. I’m not Greek at all, its free, that’s why I’m going. That and I’m hoping to be able to take some photos…since I haven’t gone out for picture taking in a couple of weeks…oh my.

__________

Update:

I went by myself and I wasn’t that impressed. Overall it was kind of “meh”. Then again, I was not hungry, I was alone, and I was kind of cranky and freaked out from my crappy car getting over to Annapolis.

http://www.virustotal.com/

I was looking around for a font, one I previously had on my computer, but somehow had deleted. The only font I could find online were all pay. After more searching, I found a site offering the font for free…if I answered a bunch of questions. Desperate I filled out the form, all with fake information, and I was taken to the font download.Once I had downloaded it, I felt suspicious of this file.

Then I found this site, Virus Total, and did a scan of the file. It took a long time to scan one little font file, longer than I thought. The results were that the file was fine. It just seemed pretty cool, an online file scan for anyone if they unable for one reason or another to install file scanner software…check the file online.
